To the Editor:
Legendary Ohio State football coach Paul Brown once famously remarked, “When you win, say nothing. When you lose, say less.”
While the execution of Osama bin Laden provides some solace and a sense of a mission accomplished, perhaps we need to be a bit more reflective in our response.
Wild celebrations, chants of “USA”, and high fives are not much different than the jingoistic exultations and machine gun fire we watch, in disbelief, from those we seek to vanquish. Perhaps we appear no different to the rest of the world.
My hope is that we grasp a more subdued and measured cogitation regarding the death of Osama bin Laden. It is the appropriate way to honor the memory of 9/11, and the best path toward peace.
