Devin takes grappling gold

Devin Church, 23, of West Tisbury, competing in the Featherweight Division, won the gold medal in the North American Grappling Association world championship meet on Saturday, May 7, at Morristown, New Jersey.

According to Devin, Grappling is akin to Jiu Jitsu. One wins a match by accumulating points for take downs and holds.

The featherweight division is for grapplers weighing 140 to 149 pounds.

Devin and several other Vineyarders train Mondays to Thursdays at the YMCA with teacher Luciano Fonseca.

The Morristown meet was Devin’s second. Previously he had grappled competitively at Milford.
