Martha's Vineyard tennis players cut wide swath in MIAA tourney

Reid Yennie, the Vineyard's first singles player, seeded first in Division IV, defeated Brent Woodard of Dighton-Rehoboth, 6-0, 6-2, to advance in the MIAA Boys South Sectional Individual Tennis Tournament, held at Barnstable, Saturday.

Yennie then beat Jack Moore of Plymouth North, 6-1, 6-1. Next, Yennie faces Nick Robbie of Harwich.

Kent Leonard, the Martha's Vineyard second singles player, seeded second, won his match against Coyle's Matt Vaz, 6-0, 6-0, and then Tony Machairas of Westport by the same one-sided score. Next up for Kent is Nauset's Nick Majewski.

In Division II, MV third singles player Justice Yennie, seeded third, got by Willy Matheson of Somerset, 6-1, 6-2, but then lost to Duxbury's Connor O'Keefe, 1-6, 2-6.

The MV first doubles team of Jackson McBride and Patrick McCarthy got the top seed in Divison IV and advanced to the finals by defeating Marshfield's best, 6-2, 6-0, and also Dartmouth's entry, 6-1, 6-2. They will face Sonny Bisazza and Donie Brodd of Barnstable in the finals.

The MV second doubles duo, Ryan Sawyer and Justin Smith, got a bye when their Falmouth opponents bowed out. They then lost to Cape Cod Academy's Tyler twosome (Kugler and DeWaltoff) 0-6, 0-6.

The boys' semi-finals and finals, as well as the doubles finals, were rained out Sunday and rescheduled to this Saturday.
