Water for Elephants (PG-13)

The setting of Sara Gruen’s best selling novel is the 1931 Benzini Brothers Circus. Jacob (Robert Pattinson), his ambition of being a veterinarian dashed, winds up caring for the animals — Rosie the elephant in particular. Jacob learns the gritty side of carnival life and falls for the wife (Reese Witherspoon) of the cruel owner (Christoph Waltz). Most of the warmth and chemistry is generated by the elephant.

Win Win (R)

Tough times bring out the best and worst. When financially troubled attorney (Paul Giamatti), the coach of the high-school’s hodgepodge wrestling team, takes on the guardianship of an elderly client (Burt Young) for added income, he also winds up being responsible for the man’s troubled teenage son (Alex Shaffer). Flawless cast includes Clare Foley, Jeffrey Tambor, Amy Ryan, and Melanie Lynskey.
