Sailing finals

The Cape & Islands Fleet Finals Regatta was sailed at Lewis Bay, Hyannis, on Friday, hosted by Barnstable High School.

Twelve teams competed in two divisions. Four races were sailed in each division. Winds were light and shifty at 5 knots.

Finishing in order were: (1) Barnstable 10, (2) Nauset 35, (3) Dartmouth 35, (4) Bishop Stang 36, (5) Martha’s Vineyard 51, (6) Nantucket 53, (7) Harwich 59, (8) Falmouth 62, (9) Dennis-Yarmouth 64, (10) Bourne 65, (11) Sandwich 72, (12) Chatham 82.

Ben Nivala and Cole Bilodeau sailed for MV in the A division. Jesse Thomas and Jake Sudarsky sailed for the Vineyard in the B division.

The annual Memorial Day 5K

The annual Memorial Day 5K road race and walk, benefit of Hospice, will start at 11 am, Sunday, May 29, in front of the Wesley Hotel, Oak Bluffs. The kids fun run will begin at 10:30 am.

Pre-race registration is Saturday at the Wesley Hotel. The fee is $15. On Sunday the registration fee is $20.

The race is sponsored by the Oak Bluffs Road Race Committee, Roger Wey, chairman.

Major and Minor All Stars

The Little League Major and Minor Leagues All Star games will be played Sunday. The minor league game starts at 1 pm. The major league game is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

Alina tops in table tennis

Alina Wen of Edgartown brought home two trophies from the May Open tournament sponsored by the Quincy Table Tennis Club at the Quincy YMCA.

In the Under-1200 competition, Alina reached the finals by winning five matches, each the best three of five games. She took the championship match 3-1 and the first place trophy. In the Under-1400 division, she finished second by winning five matches before dropping the final, 1-3.

Alina plays with the Martha’s Vineyard Table Tennis club twice a week at the West Tisbury School and on weekends at the MV YMCA.

New members are welcome without charge.

Tennis head honored

Scott Smith, executive director of Vineyard Youth Tennis, and Michael Halisky, head pro at VYT, were honored recently at the 2011 USPTA New England Division Convention, at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.

At the awards banquet, Scott Smith received the industry’s excellencea for his contribution to tennis on the Vineyard and in New England.

More than 125 of the most influential tennis teachers in New England attended the three-day convention, May 20-22. Attendance at such conventions demonstrates a teaching professional’s commitment to staying on top of the latest changes in the game and in the business of tennis, Mr. Smith said.

Interscholastic softball playoffs

Emma Hall pitched three scoreless innings in relief, as Oak Bluffs overturned a 5-1 deficit and defeated the Charter School 15-5, Monday afternoon at the Oak Bluffs School.

The Blazers advanced to play West Tisbury in a late game, Wednesday.

Ocean Eversley, a triple threat

Ocean Eversley, 53, of Oak Bluffs, competed in the Massachusetts Senior Games at UMass Lowell, May 22. She won the 100m in 14.43, the 800m in 2:47.37 and the long jump at 3.77m (12’4.5″).

The day before, Ocean ran at Springfield covering 200m in 30.58 and the 400m in 1:09.16. It’s hard to keep up with the lady!

Senior Swimmers meet at the Y

More than a dozen swimmers swam in the first Masters Mini Meet at the Vineyard’s YMCA pool, Tuesday, competing in freestyle, fly, backstroke, and breaststroke in five year age groups from 18 to 68.

Each winner in each event in every age group set a pool record which subsequent swimmers will try to better.

Most of the winning times were posted by members of the Martha’s Vineyard Masters: Les Cutler, Sue Jensen, Liz Fox and Rainy Goodale. Other winning swimmers included Mathhew Dix, Jason Lew, Rob Schiller, Zachary Lammie, Peter McLean, Robin Tuck, Bill Ewan. and Anthony Devine.
