Aloisi leaves Nantucket

John Aloisi, Nantucket's head football coach, is leaving the other island for a teaching position at Shrewsbury High School.

As an undergraduate, Aloisi led the Whalers to two Super Bowl appearances and one state championship.

When Vito Capizzo called it quits in 2009, Aloisi stepped into the breach and led the team to a winning record, 6-5, and improved upon that the next year, 7-4. He will be missed.

Softball season is extended

With a 10-win, 10-loss record, the high school softball team squeezed into the post-season tournament seeded 18th. Today the Islanders play Cardinal Spellman at Brockton in the preliminary round of Divison 2.

The Vineyarders wound up the regular season in Attleboro on May 26 against Eastern Athletic Conference rival Bishop Feehan.

The Shamrocks won 3-0, but the game was more notable for the exemplary sportmanship shown by Bishop Feehan, who honored the senior players on both teams with bouquets of sunflowers.
