Martha’s Vineyard boys tennis team rolls to second playoff win

The Martha’s Vineyard boys’ tennis team surged ahead into the MIAA division three, south sectional semi-finals, with a 5-0 victory over Ashland, Monday in Oak Bluffs.

The third-seeded Vineyarders (18-2), who blanked Canton on Friday, have yet to drop a match in the state tournament.

The first doubles tandem of Jackson McBride and Patrick McCarthy got M.V. off and running with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Cam Fields and Sam Bronstein.

Kent Leonard put the Vineyarders up 2-0, with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Matt Baum in second singles.

Time ran out on the Clockers when Justice Yennie clinched the match by winning in third singles over Eric Halperin, 7-6 (9-7) , 6-1.

Justin Smith and Ryan Sawyer took the second doubles over Ben Telschner and Mike Kaplow 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

Reid Yennie completed the Vineyard sweep with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win against 6′ 7″ Ivan Bunin.

The Vineyarders host tenth-seeded Norwell in the semi-finals, Wednesday at 3 pm.
