Martha’s Vineyard high school committee wraps up school year

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) District school committee wrapped up its last regular meeting of the school year Monday night. Committee members took a look at a revised annual school improvement plan (SIP) for 2011-12, and proposed core values beliefs and learning expectations for students.

MVRHS principal Stephen Nixon said the School Advisory Council based a new SIP narrative on comments from students, parents and community members, as well as the results of a survey.

The exercise is tied to the high school’s three-year accreditation process through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) that began this school year.

Action plans for the 2011-12 school year include beginning the use of core standards in all major subjects to target individual instruction; writing and piloting a new life skills curriculum in the second semester; expanding mandatory writing assignments in health and math; and establishing a senior student lounge.

In other business, finance manager Mark Friedman reported the high school’s finances are on track with the budget, for the most part, except for some special education, substitute teacher, and building equipment and maintenance line items.

Mr. Friedman said although he expects state aid from the Chapter 70 program will fall $160,000 short of projected revenues, the high school has strategies to cover it.

He will present the specifics at the MVRHS school committee’s end-of-the-year financial meeting on June 20, at 7 pm, in the library conference room.
