As many as 200 fifth- and sixth-graders from around the Island teamed up to field 94 amazing racers at the annual all-Island model solar car competition on Saturday. Sponsored by the Vineyard Energy Project, Cape Light Compact, and the Boys and Girls Club, the event was held at the Boys and Girls Club in Edgartown. More than two dozen volunteers helped out.
The entrants are first interviewed by a panel of community judges who award prizes for the students' knowledge and the design and technical merit of their cars. Then the cars are raced to win sweet prizes donated by Chilmark Chocolates.
