Makos make the mark

Three swimmers, all members of the Makos Swim team of the MV YMCA, Peter Best, Renee Goodale and Lila Potter traveled with their coach, Rainy Goodale, to their first try-out meet last Friday and Saturday to the South Shore YMCA in Hanover to compete in the qualifying meet for the Bay State Summer Games to be held at the Harvard pool in July. To qualify, a swimmer had to place fourth or better in an event.

Patrick qualified in the 100 Breaststroke by finishing fourth. In the 200 Breaststroke he was second.

Lila Potter was third in the Individual Medley, fourth in the 50 Freestyle, and third in the 100 Backstroke.

Renee Goodale qualified in the 100 Breaststroke placing fourth, and the 200 Breaststroke finishing third.

All three swimmers competed in the 10-12 year old age group.

Run the Chop Challenge

The annual Murdick’s Fudge five mile Run The Chop road race, benefit of Big Brothers-Big Sisters, begins at the Tisbury School, Monday, July 4, at 9:00 am.

Entry fee is $20 before July 4, $25 the day of the race when runners will receive a Run the Chop T-shirt, an MV Sharks T-shirt and a ticket to the July 4 MVSharks game with the Nashua Silver Knights at the Vineyard Baseball Park.

Awards wll go to overall and age group winners.

They’re all champions

Litlle League Championship Day is this Saturday, June 25.

The Minor League Championship game will start at 11 am.

The Major League game is scheduled for 1:30 pm.

Awards for all levels of play will be distributed immediately after the Majors game.

Holmes Holers tune up

Eleven skippers and their boats showed up for the 12 noon start of the Holmes Hole tune up race, Sunday. The planned Cross-the-Sound route was shortened due to light air.

The first boat to cross the finish line was Phil Hale’s

Shields Sloop, Wicked,

Second to complete the course was Peter Goodale’s Stormalong Two. Then came (3rd) Brian Roberts in Aileen and fourth was the Assocication’s new Commodore, Dan Culkin in Magic Time.

The HHSA will sail a harbor race on Thursday, beginning at 6:00 pm.

Bridges of Dukes County

The Bridge Club of Martha’s Vineyard resumed meeting at the Tisbury Senior Center, Saturday morning with seven-count ‘em-seven tables in play.

North-South winners were Bill Blakesley and Cecily Greenaway, followed by (2) Cheryl Neal and Stanley Kissell. Tied at third were Jim Kaplan and Carolyn Flynn and Foster Greene with Ken Judson.

Best at East-West were: Tillie Foster and Emily Robertson. Second: Trudy Ulmer and Regina McDonough. Third: Shirley Strother and Abe Selman.

Hoops

Sign up for basketbalf and/or other activities at Niantic Park, Oak Bluffs. Men’s League basketball games will begin play Wednesday, July 6.
