The Martha’s Vineyard Hospital administration confirmed that Dr. Peter Laursen voluntarily removed himself from the hospital rotation schedule last week. The sudden absence of Dr. Laursen, a primary care physician who also works in the hospital emergency department, ignited a flurry of rumors.
In response to a telephone call from The Times Monday, Marie Laursen, Dr. Laursen’s wife, said her husband is a very private person who would have no comment.
“He will not be talking about this,” she said.
Ms. Laursen confirmed that her husband is on a temporary leave from his hospital responsibilities. She said rumors that he was escorted from his office by police or that he was dismissed are absolutely untrue.
Ms. Laursen would not comment on the nature of the leave but said it is unrelated to any medical issue.
Tim Walsh, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital CEO, confirmed in a telephone call that Dr. Laursen is on personal leave. Mr. Walsh said he could not comment further on what is a personnel matter.
