Police arrested Daniel BenDavid, 48, of Oak Bluffs on a drunk driving charge Tuesday evening, after he crashed his van on Barnes Road, near Featherstone Center for the Arts.
Mr. BenDavid was taken by ambulance to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, where he was treated overnight.
According to police, speed and alcohol were factors in the accident.
Police say Mr. BenDavid attempted to pass a taxi in a no-passing zone on Barnes Road.
“He lost control of the vehicle and hit some cement pillars on the side of the road,” Lt. Tim Williamson said. “It was a pretty violent crash.”
Mr. BenDavid was arrested at the hospital. He will be charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, plus several motor vehicle violations.
Mr. BenDavid awaits trial in Edgartown District Court in a separate case.
In April, he and an accomplice were accused of breaking into the home of a 77-year-old man and stealing a safe that contained about $85,000. Mr. BenDavid faces charges of burglary, larceny, breaking and entering to commit a felony, breaking into a depository, and two charges of conspiracy. He was also charged with malicious vandalism, after police say he slashed the tires of a relative of the victim.
