3-on-3 Hoops Classic returns

The ninth annual Vineyard Streetball Classic, a 3-on-3 basketball tourney, will tip off at 10 am, Saturday, July 2, at Niantic Park, Oak Bluffs.

Players ages 10 to 18 are eligible for the double elimination tourney. Top teams in each division (10-12, 13-14, 15-18) will receive trophies. All players will receive Vineyard Streetball Classic T-shirts.

There will be give-aways and coupons drawn throughout the day.

Players will also compete in a half court and a free throw contest.

The Classic is a fundraiser for needed repairs to the Niantic Park basketball court, while promoting exercise.

Tournament benefits Fish Farm project

The fourth annual Early Bird Doubles Tennis Tournament to benefit the M.V. Fish Farm for Haiti Project was held at the Farm Neck courts this past weekend. It was a shaky start Friday, with bad weather predicted for the weekend but finished on Sunday with finals played under under clear skies.

Four doubles divisions were featured for 49 players: Men’s A, Women’s A, Mixed A, and Mixed B.

Winners at Men’s A were Max Epply and Andy McHugh. 6-2, 6-2, with Kent Leonard and Evan Valdez, the runners-up.

At Women’s A, the top scorers were Lorry Eible and Sue Kimball. Runners up were Nina Bramhall and Deb Naumann.

The Mixed A winning team was Monte Bizzarro and Connie McHugh, 6-0, 7-5. Runners up: Sue Kimball and Tom Nova.

At Mixed B, the winners were Lili Cooperrider and Skip Dostal, 6-1, 6-2. David Walker and Mary Ellen Wyman were runners up.

In consolation draws, the Men’s A team of Doug Cooper and Jock Cooperrider were first at 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 in the third set tie-breaker.

The Mixed A doubles winners were John Harris and Helen Najarian, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

At Mixed B Doubles, top scores belonged to Gene Erez and Kathy Lattanzi, 6-3, 6-1. Runners up: Todd Hollister and Karen Wojtkielo.

Mas Kimball, organizer and director of the tourney, expressed his gratitude to the Farm Neck Golf Club for making the courts available for the annual fundraiser.

Special thanks also went to Barbara Leonard and Todd Hollister who worked with Mas at organizing and running the tournament.

Halisky vs Owens, Saturday

Vineyard Youth Tennis head pro Michael Halisky will play Tyler Owens at Farm Neck Saturday, July 2, at 6 pm. Halisky is the number one ranked player in New England in the 35 and over division. Owens is a former tour player and is the adult tennis director at the Edgartown Yacht Club.

The 25th annual Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Golf Tournament at Farm Neck, will tee off Sunday and Monday, July 17 and 18. To register, see www.mvhospital.com/golf or call 693-4645.

Run the Chop

The annual Murdick’s Fudge five-mile Run the Chop Challenge begins at 9 am, Monday, July 4, at the Tisbury school, a benefit for Big’ Brothers/Big Sisters of Martha’s Vineyard.

The registration fee is $20 before Independence Day and $25 the day of the race.

A Fun Run for youngsters 12 years or less begins at 8:30 am, for which the regisration fee is $5.

Awards will be given to overall and age group winners. Run the Chop Tees and MVSharks Tees, plus a ticket to a Sharks baseball game, will be presented to all finishers.

Bridgework

Barbara Besse and Jim Kaplan were best at North – South at the Bridge Club of MV tables, Saturday, at Tisbury’s Council on Aging, edging out Francis Finney and Clara J. Hargrave, who were second.

Best at East-West were Cheryl B. Stark and Jane Haley, followed by Maggie Gasnick and Brenda Davenport.

Five tables were in play.

Pan Mass to ride again

At least three Vineyarders will participate in the 32nd annual Pan Mass Challenge, a 200-mile bicycle ride, for the Jimmy Fund, August 6-7: John Schilling, Jim Reynolds, and Raymond Sylvia. This will be the 21st time that John has made the trip and the 17th for Jim.

According to PMC, since its founding in 1980, the challenge has raised more than $303 million for cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Holmes Holers sail again

Sunday’s Holmes Hole triangular race from Vineyard Haven Harbor to West Chop, then East Chop, and return was delayed by light air and shortened by the race committee. Eleven boats started and the order of A Divison finish was Steve Besse in Apres, Phil Hale in Wicked, Charlie Felder in Blu J, Andy Berry in Isobar, Mike Loberg in Masquerade, and Mo Flam in Penelope.

In the B Division, Dan Culkin was first in Magic Time. Following, in order, were David Lott in Avanti, John and Lisa Stout in Isabella, and Rebecca Colson in Silhouette.

Fourteen boats posted for the afternoon race, again a triangular course reversing the morning route.

The A Divison winner was Roger Becker in Gloria, followed by Andy Berry in Isobar, Mike Loberg in Masquerade, Mary Worrell in Second Wind, Phil Hale in Wicked, Steve Besse in Apres, Mo Flam in Penelope, Ed Cerullo in Undine, and Charlie Felder in Blu J.

Dan Culkin won the B Division, trailed by Rebeca Colson in Silhouette, Bow Van Riper in Tyche, John and Lisa Stout in Isabella, and Stuart Halpert in Providence.
