A driver took a right turn into a telephone pole on Beach Road just opposite Cumberland Farms, snarling traffic about 6 pm, Monday.

Erma Malloy, 73, of Oak Bluffs and New York City, struck the side of a telephone pole that juts out slightly into the busy roadway and bears the scars of numerous side-mounted rear view mirrors. "As best we can determine, she thought she was making a right-hand turn," Tisbury Police Sgt. Robert Fiske said.

Sergeant Fiske said that Ms. Malloy, who was driving a 1972 Mercedes sedan, was disoriented. She was transported to Martha's Vineyard Hospital.
