Five LAX girls chosen

The Eastern Athletic Conference has named five Vineyarders to the Girls All Star Lacrosse team: seniors Molly Fischer and Niki Alexander, junior Madison Hughes, sophomore Alayna Hutchinson, and freshman Isabel Smith.

Molly Fischer was also chosen for honors on the Eastern Massachusetts All-Star team.

Tony pars on

Tony Grillo of Farm Neck Golf Club, West Tisbury and Harvard University, where he is captain of the golf team for the second year, trailed the leaders of the 103rd Massachusetts Amateur Championship at Wyantenuck Country Club by two strokes after the first round of play.

Tony shot an even par 70. Five other players are tied at two under par 68.

Joe Grillo, Tony’s father, is caddying for his son.

Brenden Beeg of the Vineyard Golf Club finished the first day of competition at four over par, 74.

Tuesday, Grillo shot another par round of 70 and qualified for Wednesday match play seeded sixth. His opponent in match play is Jack Whelan of Myopia Hunt Club, the 27 seed.

Beeg’s second round Tuesday was a one over par 71. His 5 over par 145 two day total gives him a 23 seed and qualifies him for match play with the 10th seed, Ryan Riley of Norton CC.

The top seed with a two day total of six under par 134 is Colin Brennan of Indian Ridge CC.

Silver Jubilee for MVH golf tourney

The 25th annual Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Golf Tournament and Cocktail Party at Farm Neck Golf Club are this Sunday and Monday, July 17-18.

The $500 entry fee is good for one playing spot and two tickets to the pre-tournament Cocktail Party.

Race for the Rink

The Martha’s Vineyard Arena will be holding the first annual “Run to the Rink” 5K road race this Saturday, July 16, at 10 am. Registration is on Friday, July 15th from 3:00-6:00 pm or July 16, from 7:30-9:00 am in the Arena lobby. The cost is $20 before July 16 and $25 the day of the race. There are divisions for males and females of all ages. Walkers are welcome. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer please email marthasvineyardarena@gmail.com or call 774-521-9870. A free public skate for all ages will follow the road race from noon to 2 pm.

Nantucket All Stars visit

An All Star team of nine year old Vineyard Little Leaguers played host to a Nantucket team of nine year old Little Leaguers at Veira Park, Oak Bluffs, in a double header, Tuesday.

The Vineyarders scored first crossing the plate in the top of the second, but Nantucket scored five times in the bottom of the fourth and twice more in the fiffh to claim, 7-2.

After a hearty lunch served by the MV team’s mothers, it was on to a second game.

The MV nine year old All Stars: Jared Reagan, Owen Bresnick, Richie Bartlett. Ben Peters, Jeremy Regan, Ryan Scanlon, Peter Burke, Joe Serpa, Summer Cardoza, Kenny Hatt, Patrick Dutton, Chris Ferry, Morgan Estrella, Harold Lawry, and Colby Balboni.

USTA doubles tourney at VYT

Vineyard Youth Tennis will sponsor a USTA Doubles Tournament for young people 14 to 16 years of age on Sunday, July 24. Entry fee ($28) deadline is Sunday, July 17. There will be a consolation round for those who lose their first round matches.

Flex League leaders

This year’s Flex League enrolled more than 60 Island players for the ten-week season, extended this year by rainy weather.

The Ladies singles champion was Lisa Reagan,

The 3.0 Ladies Doubles Champs were Kimberly Averill and Suzanne Provost Flanders.

The 3.5 Ladies Doubles Champs were Mollee Lewis and Julie Lively.

The 3.0 Mixed Doubles Champions: Kimberly and Jon Averill.

Bridge Workers

Ann Brown and Duncan Walton were best at North-South at the Bridge Clubof M.V., Saturday. Carol Butler and Jim Kaplan were second.Best at East-West were Constance Batty and Wilhelmina Goff. ClaudiaBowser and Judy Morse were second.Seven Tables were in play.

The recently formed Island Bridge Club, which meets at the high school on Thursdays at 7 pm, had 13 tables in play this week. First at North-South were Barbara and Susan Silk, followed by Sandy Lindheimer and Barbara Besse. Sitting East-West the leading team was Foster Osborne and Lou Winkleman. Audrey Egger and Miles Jaffe were runners up. Players are welcome with or without partners for a fee of $6.

Sailors race Thursday, foiled Sunday

The Holmes Hole Sailing Association’s Thursday evening race took the fleet from red nun 6 to nun 4 at West Chop then to green can 6 at East Chop and back to the starting line. The first leg was a run downwind. After rounding the nun, a starboard reach to the can was followed by a beat to windward to the finish line.

Finishing first was David Lott in Avanti, second was Phil Hale in Wicked. Dan Culkin was third in Magic Time, trailed by (4) Peter Wagner in Spring, (5) Bow Van Riper in Tyche, (6) Mary Worrell in Second Wind, (7) Andy Berry in Isobar, (8) John Thelby in Phoenix, (9) Stuart Halpert in Providence, (10) Jerrry Goodale in Stormalong, (11) Tm Aaureden in Nederua, (12) Ed Cerullo in Undine, (13) Woody Bowman in Julia Lee, (14) Stephen Besse in Apres, (15) Michael Hopp in Evelyn Mae, (16) Matthew Thomas in Grasshopper and (1) Frank Desimone in Lagoonah.

Sunday’s Robinson’s Hole Rendezvous was abandoned when the fleet was becalmed at West Chop.

The racing series continues with the Thursday evening race. July 21. This weekend the fleet will participate in the Sail MV Island Cup race.

Vineyard Football Association recap

Tuesday night on the pitch at Veterans Park, Atlantic Football Club (AFC) tied Coop de Ville 1-1 and Sports Haven beat Shirley’s Hardware, 2-1, in the nightcap.

Martin Aranzabe scored for AFC and Nicholas Banda found the goal for Coop. Buck Reynolds notched both goals for Sports Haven and Lucas Brewer tallied for Shirley’s.

Last Thursday, the Coop beat Monto Orthopedics,1-0, on a goal from Luiz Paulo Miranda. Shirley’s won the next match, 2-1, over MV Celtic. Lucas Brewer bagged both Shirley’s goals. Rory Shepard scored for Celtic.
