Tisbury EMT sponsors mobile phone safety pledge

July 13, 2011

The Tisbury Volunteer Ambulance Association is calling on Island drivers, especially young drivers, to take a pledge vowing not to use mobile phones while driving.

During the Tisbury Street Fair, more than 300 people signed the pledge, according to Tisbury EMT Tracey Jones.

"It was a big success," Ms. Jones said. "We had little kids asking if they could sign it for their parents. Then we had parents calling their teenagers to come out and sign it. But then there were people who said 'I couldn't sign that.'"

Ms. Jones said she hopes to expand the program to the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School.

Under Massachusetts law, it is illegal for drivers under age 18 to use a mobile phone while driving. It is illegal for drivers of any age to compose or read text messages while driving.

For more information on the pledge, contact the Tisbury Volunteer Ambulance Association at 508-696-4214.
