Nutmeg State runner wins the tenth Scoops

Four hundred eleven runners completed the Vineyard Scoops 5K Tour of Edgartown on a hot and humid Sunday morning last weekend.

Winner of the race with a time of 17:31 was Michael Dolan, 43, of Hamden, CT, seven seconds better than 30-year-old John Hinchion of Peabody, 17:38.

The next two finishers were teenagers. Russell Stevens, 17, of Colchester, CT, was third at 18:27 and Patrick Turpin, 16 of Westford, fourth in 18:56. Twenty-year-old Jackson Bangs of Upper Montclair, NJ was fifth in 19:21.

The rest of the top ten to complete the run were (6) Jackson Bangs, 22, of Upper Montclair, NJ, (7) Adam Smith, 18, of Sparks, Md., (8) Peter Burns, 40, of Plymouth, (9) Daid Metz, 29 of Cambridge, and (10) Ricardo Hernandez-Pinz of Roslindale.

Bonnie Kingsbury, 32, of Vineyard Haven was the first woman to cross the finish line. Her time was an impressive 20:57, nine seconds ahead of 15-year-old Katie Stevens of Colchester, CT, and 14 seconds better than 12-year-old Gianna Mastromatteo of Worcester. Bonnie, Katie, and Gianna were 13, 14 and 15 overall.

The next female to finish the run was Rebecca Katz, 25, of Burlington, VT who was 27th and Lizzie Van Name, 17, of Stamford, CT, who was 33rd.

The rest of the top ten females were (37) Hilda Lewis, 30, of Vineyard Haven, (38) Brittany Reed, 16, of Plymouth, (49) Beth Grimes, 44, of North Attleboro, (50) Kelly Anna Sherlock, 16, of Huntington, NY, and (51) Meg Van Name, 21 of Stamford, CT.

It's the road race season. This Saturday is the 5.25-mile Irish Pub Road Race, beginning at 10 am at the Pub, 126 Main Street, Harwich. Entry fee is $15,

Also Saturday, the Hog Jog to Cure Melanoma 5K at Town Neck Beach, Sandwich, Entry fee is $25,

Also Saturday, Aug. 13, the Brew Run, 5.2 miles at 4:00 pm. from the Woodshed, Brewster.

The Falmouth Walk, 3.2 miles at 10 am from Falmouth Town Hall Square, benefit of Falmouth charities.

Falmouth Recreation Family Fun Run, short distance races, all age groups, register from 3:00 pm.

Saturday, August 13, is also the date for the monster Chilmark Road Race. Registration fee is $30, $20 for 11-year-old (or younger) runners until August 6, then fees increase to $40 and $25.
