It’s a fact. The August issue of Martha’s Vineyard Magazine features a number of special people from our town. Janet Messineo writes about eating “trash fish” and Louis Larsen of the Net Result discusses bluefin tuna. Bill Ingraham, owner of Island Color Center, talks about growing up surfing on the Vineyard, and memories of childhood summers on the island are shared by Alexandra Styron.

Reminiscences of the Ag Fair are given by Patrick Best, Andrew Jacobs, and Cathy Weiss, while Nancy Jephcote talks about fiddling at the Fair. Find out how Dan Feeney and Sue O’Rourke built up the Martha’s Vineyard Family Campground.

“A Flagpole Tribute on West Chop” honors Phillip Leverett Saltonstall and mentions Charles C. Jackson, William Minot Jr., and Stephen Weld, along with Constance Fuller Sanborn and Roy Goff. Learn about our West Chop Light from Jason Olsen, Joe Walker, and Jeffery Rivett. And Rachel Orr writes about the history of the Gay Head Light.

The 20th annual M.V. Rotary Club pancake breakfast is Sunday from 7 am to 1 pm at the Anchors in Edgartown. The bus from the parking lot drops you off at Mayhew Lane.

The 28th David Crohan Top Hat Concert will be Sunday at 4:30 pm at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. David will be performing with Jenny Friedman. A potluck reception follows. Admission is $25. The money raised benefits the Top Hat Fund (a new roof) for the Community Solar Greenhouse.

Little girls dressed as their favorite princesses will receive an autographed picture of Ariel if they go to see “The Little Mermaid” at the Performing Arts Center next Sunday at 6:30 pm. Featuring the Atlantic Coast Ballet, the performance is presented by the Children in the Arts of M.V. The live ballet is appropriate for all ages and families. Tickets are $13 at the door.

Another event that your family will love is the Vineyard Haven Band. They are playing in Owen Park this Sunday. Bring a picnic and enjoy the rousing music played by your friends and neighbors. The program begins at 8 pm.

You must get to the Vineyard Haven Library early next Wednesday if you want to hear Geraldine Brooks talk about her wonderful new book, “Caleb’s Crossing.” The library will close at 5:30 pm and reopen at 6:30 to begin seating for the 7 pm talk. Nearby parking and library seating is limited.

Have you read Jim Kaplan’s new book on baseball? “The Greatest Game Ever Pitched” is about Juan Marichal and Warren Spahn and the pitching duel of the century. If you love baseball, you will love this book.

Next Thursday at 3:30 pm the Cape Cod African Dance & Drum Ensemble will perform for families in the garden (weather permitting) at the Library. They are West African and American artists who practice and perform traditional West African dance and drumming. This program is suitable for children ages 5 and up.

Bill Schustik, an American troubadour, will give a half-hour performance at our library on Friday at 5 pm. This Civil War era music is to promote awareness of the exhibit at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. The exhibit that depicts the Vineyard’s history in the Civil War runs through April 2012.

Paul Karasik’s cartoons have appeared in The New Yorker and for the month of August they will appear on the walls of the West Tisbury Public Library. Meet him on Friday at 4 pm.

Water exercises at the Mansion House are now called Poolates, using Pilates principles of stabilizing the torso to protect shoulders and lower back and working the abdominals. Brenda says it is still an aerobic class with aquatic exercises, on Mondays and Thursday mornings at 8:15. Brenda also teaches classes in Pilates on land for all levels.
