Oak Bluffs police are investigating an early Sunday morning break-in and the theft of a cash register containing a significant amount of cash from Murdick’s Fudge on Circuit Avenue.

Lieutenant Tim Williamson said a thief entered the shop in the early morning through a back window and removed the shop’s register that held approximately $4,000.

Tipped off by a passerby, police on Tuesday found near the harbor breakwater an abandoned white bicycle, the empty register, and a large green trash bag they suspect may have been used to hide the register. The recovered material is being processed for physical evidence, police said.

Police ask that anyone who may have seen a man on a white bicycle, or carrying a large green trash bag early Sunday morning to contact them at 508-693-0750.
