Thanks to those who helped make us safe

To the Editor:

This is a long letter of thanks because so many people volunteered their time and talents to help make a dangerous storm situation into a well managed emergency action.

The up-Island towns of West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah were safe and secure due to the hard work and joint efforts of the following organizations:

West Tisbury Police Chief and Officers; Chilmark Police Chief and Officers; Aquinnah Police Chief and Officers; West Tisbury Fire Chief and Emergency Response Crews; Chilmark Fire Chief and Emergency Response Crews; Highway supervisors for West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah; Emergency management directors for West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah; Red Cross volunteers; Salvation Army volunteers; Medical Reserve Corp volunteers; Vineyard Nursing Association; Chilmark Community Center.

The path of Irene may have spared Martha’s Vineyard more serious damage — and for that we are grateful. As chief of the Tri-Town Ambulance Service, I had the unique opportunity to witness the unified efforts of all of these organizations and can attest to the heartfelt camaraderie of all these volunteers working together.
