The first Martha’s Vineyard Wind Festival has been postponed until Saturday, Sept. 3, at Waban and Ocean parks in Oak Bluffs, but despite last weekend’s threats of Hurricane Irene, the event was launched Friday, Aug. 26, under a tent at Featherstone Center for the Arts.

The event is the inspiration of Holly Alaimo and Joan Hewson (a coordinator for Boston’s Head of the Charles Regatta). The launch party included hors d’oeuvres by Tea Lane Caterers, wine and beer, a silent auction, and music by a jazz trio made up of John Alaimo, Michael Tinus, and Michael Albarice.

The kites constructed and decorated by local artists were displayed. A drawing was held for Leslie Baker’s original watercolor painting that Don McKillop, owner of Oak Bluffs’ Dragonfly Gallery, won. Ms. Baker’s painting was reproduced for the festival poster.
