Edgartown police are investigating a "smash and grab" burglary at a parking area in the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest on Labor Day.

Police say Vera Dello Russo of Edgartown parked her gray Saab sedan in the parking area near the Bold Meadow subdivision about 9:45 am. When she returned from her exercise routine in the state forest, she found her passenger side window smashed.

"The asphalt in that parking lot is crumbling," Det. Sgt. Chris Dolby said. "They used a big chunk of asphalt to smash the window."

Ms. Dello Russo told police her purse was gone. She described it to them as a silver purse, about 12 inches by 8 inches.

Police say they have few leads in the case, but invite anyone with information to call the Edgartown police anonymous crime tip line at 774-310-1190.
