Congratulations to Jim and Sonya Norton on their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Everyone is invited to join Jim and Sonya tomorrow at 7 pm at the Tisbury Senior Center to see a DVD compiled by their daughter, Sarah Louisa, in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations to James C. Knowles, who received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) degree from The University of Massachusetts at Lowell. As an upperclassman, James worked on computer-related projects for the university and continues to do so. The son of Mary and Christopher Knowles, he is a 2002 graduate of The Tisbury School and 2006 graduate of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
Did I tell you? After I moved my car out from under a fallen oak tree, another big limb fell onto it where I moved it. I was still lucky. Our neighbor Sean Patrick came and dragged it off. Need any wood?
Saturday is Featherstone’s last summer event. Tour 15 Island artists’ studios, including Jeri Dantzig, Barney Zeitz, and Traeger DiPietro, who have studios in Vineyard Haven. Start between 10 and 4 at Featherstone to get your map. Tickets are $50 at Alley’s, Bunch of Grapes, or at Featherstone. A reception follows the tour at Olga Hirshhorn’s home from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
M.V. Democrats gather Saturday at 9 am at the Howes House in West Tisbury to meet with our state senator, Dan Wolf. He will answer questions from the audience. All are welcome. No charge. Free coffee.
On Saturday morning at 10, Barbara McBride will lead a healing Eucharist in the Anderson Room of Grace Episcopal Church. The M.V. Chapter of the Order of St. Luke welcomes those interested in learning about Christian healing or in need of healing. Barbara McBride is a retired computer scientist and dedicated to the Christian healing ministry.
Congratulations to Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard on 30 years of helping families on the Island. A Golf Tournament at Mink Meadows commemorates this anniversary on September 25. Mystery writer Judith Campbell will share her secrets for getting your words in print and discuss her latest book, “An Unspeakable Mission,” at the library on Tuesday at 7 pm. The reverend Judy has held workshops on writing and now offers classes in how to get your book published.
Also next Tuesday, the Flatbread Company gives a donation to M.V. Center for Living when you buy a pizza between 5 and 10 pm. You probably already know that Flatbread also has delicious salads and desserts.
Tom Dresser will speak about his new book, “The Wampanoag Tribe of Martha’s Vineyard,” at the Chilmark Library at 5:30 pm on Wednesday. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the history of the Wampanoag Tribe. All are welcome to this free program.
The Tisbury Travel Club plans a trip to Beauport, the Henry Sleeper McCann house and grounds, in Gloucester on October 13. Also enjoy a tour of historic Gloucester and lunch at the Gloucester House Restaurant. Then travel home along the North Shore seawall past Hammond Castle and the lovely little town of Magnolia. An exhibit of still-life oil paintings by L. Harriet Reasoner is the Art in the Stacks feature for September at the Vineyard Haven Library. A photographer as well as a painter, she has won awards at the All Island Art Show and the Ag Fair.

It was a treat to run into Sam Decker this week. He is living in Mexico where he has a Vietnamese restaurant. The locals like the food and there are several ex-pats in the area. He is on island to get married. She’s a lucky girl, Sam.
