Admire the colorful chrysanthemums decorating the walks along Main Street. You might notice that the black iron planters match the trashcans. The Beautifying Tisbury Committee is responsible. They also put up the benches and the welcome banners. This is your embarkation fees at work in our town. The flowers do really look lovely.

Tomorrow you can vote on your favorite short film. The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society presents the 8th annual Manhattan Short Film Festival. Ten films made all over the world will be up for your vote. Richard Paradise is like the Energizer bunny —he just keeps on going. You will enjoy this treat if you’ve not done it before. This year the complete 120-minute program will be screened on Friday and Saturday evenings at the Cornell Theatre at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $10. Cost is only $7 for M.V. Film Society members. Memberships are available at the movies.

Tomorrow evening you can enjoy three performance artists from Renaissance House who will entertain at 8 pm at the Cornell Theatre. Dahlia Ross writes and sings her own songs. Journalist and writer LeVan D. Hawkins is also a performer. Storme Webber is a vocal and visual artist with extensive experience. They all have backgrounds in stage, television, and multi-cultural productions.

The Tashmoo Spring Building is the site of an opening art reception on Friday evening from 4:30 to 7. After that the building will open on Saturday afternoon and each day through next week from noon to 4 pm. Extensive restoration work over the past five years on this historic brick building off State Road has been supported by private, state, and Community Preservation funds. This is a good time to check out what has been done to the 1887 pumping station.

The benefit show will display art by 17 Tisbury town employees and officials. Also offered are food and drink, live music with the Tashmoo Trio, and good company. The show is a fundraising event, with a percentage of sales of the artists’ work going to the continuing restoration of the Tashmoo Spring Building.

On Tuesday at 7 pm at the Vineyard Haven Library you can meet Dr. Barbara Okun. She is a counseling psychology professor at Northeastern University. This week she will speak about ways to help families cope with terminal illness. Her major interest is helping families handle the unexpected and to be prepared to deal with the expected events of life.

You still have time to sign up to ride Cycle Martha’s Vineyard. This scenic trip is a week from Saturday, on October 1. It is a benefit ride for Rotary of M.V. as well as for the special events for patients at Windemere. There are two rides, 50K and 100K, followed by a fabulous pig roast and an awesome band to help celebrate your accomplishment. Visit cyclemarthasvineyard.org to learn more. No fundraising on Saturday, just enjoy a beautiful ride with friends.

Also a week from Saturday you can get rid of old computers, printers, electrical appliances (small and large), stereos, or ACs or any such machines taking up space. Electronic Disposal Day is October 1, from 9 am to 2 pm at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, on Edgartown–Vineyard Haven Road across from the high school. Start planning now to take in old toasters and toaster ovens, hair dryers, refrigerators, tape recorders, etc., to benefit Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.
