Oh my. Things are shutting down up Island. The Chilmark Tavern is closed and so are the Beach Plum Inn and Menemsha Market. But that is Chilmark. Up in Aquinnah you can still get breakfast and lunch at the Aquinnah shop until Columbus Day. Faith’s Seafood Shack is also still open and of course all the shops, and you know the end of season is a great time to buy.

The following items are the last scheduled events of the season for the Aquinnah Cultural Center at the Vanderhoop Homestead, which will close at end of day on October 8 and reopen next June. On Friday, September 30, there is a Dugout Canoe Making demonstration from 11 am to 4 pm. Join Darius Coombs as he shows the traditional method of boat building by using fire to hollow and shape a log into a canoe. There will also be a video presentation of a dugout canoe trip from the Cape to Martha’s Vineyard and a fishnet-making demonstration.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, Wednesday, Oct. 5, and Friday, Oct. 7, you can tour the Vanderhoop Homestead from 11 am to 4 pm.

And on Saturday, Oct. 8, there will be ” A Day of Traditional Wampanoag Games” from 11 am to 4 pm. Join Jonathan Perry and place your bet in a game of Hubbub, test your hand-eye coordination with hoop and spear, run a mile in traditional football, and make your own ring and pin to take home ($10 crafting fee). Everyone at the center would like to thank all of the visitors for a great season.

The Martha’s Vineyard Cultural Council grant-writing workshop will be on Friday, Sept. 30, at the Howes House in West Tisbury at 6 pm.

The Electronics Disposal Day is from 9 am to 2 pm this Saturday, October 1, at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, 111 Edgartown Road across from the high school. Fees are between $1 and $30. Please check the website for more details: www.mvcommunityservices.com.

The Boston String Quartet will perform this Sunday at the Chilmark Community Church, at 4 pm. They will perform a program of contemporary music from around the world, in different styles, from jazz to folk. Tickets will be available at the door.

The second annual Martha’s Vineyard Yoga Festival is being held Columbus Day Weekend, October 7 to 10, at the Beach Plum Inn in Menemsha. There are many great classes being taught by your favorite Island yoga teachers and also some great guest teachers. There will be other holistic services available during the weekend, including acupuncture and massage that you can sign up for and a raw foods dinner on Saturday night that is a benefit for Island Food Pantry. The full schedule of classes can be found at mvyogafestival.com. Tickets for these classes are available at www.mvtickets.com. You can also volunteer and get some classes for free in exchange, if you are interested in volunteering contact, nevette@previdconsulting.com. It sounds like it’s going to be a stellar event.

We have some new staff at the Aquinnah Library; please stop by and welcome Barbara Lampson, who is the new associate and Penny Huff who is the new assistant. They will both be there two days a week. Aside from being thrilled to have found two wonderful new staff members, Cathy is very glad that the interview process is over. She received 43 inquiries about both positions and interviewed 31 applicants. It will be great to have a steady team there after all the uprooting over the past year or so.

Phil Weinstein’s next class in his series on colonialism will be at the Chilmark Library on November 3, and the book being discussed will be E.M. Forester’s “A Passage to India”.

Anja May and her sons, Finn and Yossi, just returned from a program held in the Catskills called, “The Art of Mentoring” it was presented by Vermont Wilderness School, and Anja was positively glowing recounting her experience there. It sounded like a cross between Outward Bound and a walkabout or some other rite of passage outdoor challenge. It was great to see Anja so excited and so connected to something that is obviously important to her. I look forward to seeing where this takes her.
