Martha’s Vineyard businesses promote breast cancer awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In recognition of that designation, many businesses across the country, including ones on Martha’s Vineyard, will participate in promotional activities to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research this month.

Among such efforts by local businesses, the Vineyard Tennis Center Workout and Spa, located at Martha’s Vineyard Airport, is offering “Pink Hours” for the month of October. From noon to 3 pm, women may work out at a cost of $10, instead of the usual $20 a day rate. All proceeds will be donated to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for breast cancer research. For more information, call 508-696-8000.

At Curves of Vineyard Haven women’s fitness center, women who join in the month of October will not be charged a new member fee if they show proof of a mammogram within the past year or make a $25 donation to breast cancer research.

For more information contact Curves of Vineyard Haven at 508-696-3030. It is located at the Woodland Center, 459 State Road.

According to statistics from the American Cancer Society, breast cancer remains a leading cause of cancer death in women, second only to lung cancer.
