The Heath Hen Yarn and Quilt Shop's new owner Jan Paul, left, with former owner Lynne Benson.

Unlike the bird that inspired its name, the Heath Hen Yarn and Quilt Shop located at Tisbury Marketplace in Vineyard Haven has escaped extinction.

Jan Paul, a West Tisbury artist, purchased the long-standing business from owner Lynne Benson on October 26. Ms. Benson is moving to North Carolina and put the business up for sale in July, according to a press release. She planned to close by Halloween if it did not sell. With the deadline fast approaching, Ms. Paul's purchase gave the Heath Hen a reprieve.

The Heath Hen will remain open until November 12 and continue selling yarns, fabric, and needlecraft accessories. Ms. Paul plans to reopen the business in the spring of 2012 at a new location to be announced, the press release said.
