Thanksgiving for neighbors in need

The Family to Family Program of Serving Hands food distribution is working to ensure that Island families in need will have a great Thanksgiving meal. The organizers seek sponsors for these families to contribute the cost of one family’s meal, $25. In 2010, Family to Family provided more than 170 meals.

Each meal basket will include turkey, stuffing, five lbs. potatoes, two lbs. onions, one lb. of carrots, three lbs. of apples, three lbs. of oranges, fresh butternut squash, a dozen eggs, cranberry sauce, and canned pumpkin.

Family to Family reports that donations have lagged this year, although the need for this help has increased.

“The folks that come in for the Thanksgiving baskets are in great need,” Betty Burton, writing on behalf of Family to Family, said. “Often their refrigerators are almost empty, so, not only does this supply a holiday meal, but it in fact just puts food in their refrigerator.”

Contributions may be made to the Vineyard Committee on Hunger, noting that it is for the Family-to-Family Program. Send to the Vineyard Committee on Hunger (VCOH), PO Box 4685, Vineyard Haven 02568.

It’s not too late to help.
