Decline persists in SSA traffic volumes

November 22, 2011

Through November 7, Steamship Authority traffic volumes for passengers, autos, and freight to and from both islands have continued to decline.

Passengers are off 1.6 percent compared with the same period one year ago, autos off two tenths of a percent, and freight off 1.3 percent. The Vineyard passenger numbers for the year to date as of November 7, are flat, but passenger travel to and from Nantucket, down 1.6 percent, resulted in an overall decline.

On the balance sheets, thanks to some cost cutting and repeated fare increases, revenue from passengers is up 5.1 percent, autos up 1.8 percent, and freight 2.8 percent.
