Turkey Trot and Splash

The annual Oak Bluffs 5k Turkey Trot Thanksgiving day race takes off from the OB Police Station at 8:30 am. The registration fee is $10, to benefit the fuel assistance program.

The boldest and/or most foolish, will accompany host Roger Wey for a group swim following the run.

Shotgun shoot is Sunday

The Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club will host its annual fall shotgun shoot Sunday beginning at 10 am. The shoot provides a warmup to the two-week deer shotgun season that begins on Monday, Nov. 28.

Competitive events include shooting at a standing deer target set at 60 yards and a five target-over-the-shoulder trap shoot. The best score in the standing deer target and trap shoot determine the “top gun” champ.

The competition is open to members and nonmembers. There is a small entry fee and spectators are welcome.

The club is located at the end of Third Street in Edgartown off the Vineyard Haven-Edgartown Road.

Bridgers of Dukes County

Richard Colter and partner David Donald took first place in the Thursday, November 17 Island Bridge Club competition, Barbara and Susan Silk were second, less than a percentage point behind the winners. Dan and Nancy Cabot were third and Diana “Dinny” Dozier and partner Joan Perrine finished fourth.

Six tables were in play. The IBC meets each Thursday at 7 pm in the Howes House West Tisbury. There will be no game on Thanksgiving Day, November 24.

Darting at the PA

On November 3, Gus Leaf, Rick Silva, Scott Carey, and Phil Packish defeated Wes Wood, Fred Hall, Linda Wood, and Tom Della Rocco. Each of the winners squeezed by 6-5. Donny Welty hit a 100 three-dart-on.

The next Thursday, Wood, Hall and Wood won the night, besting Leaf, Silva and Cherrie Nunes, 10-1.

On November 17, Don Welty, Jeff Wray, Chris Townes, and Len Vanderhoop took the money, 10-1, from Gus Leaf’s team.

Dana Rezendes hit a 110 three-dart-on. Mike Silvia hit a 60 three-dart-off.

On Monday evening, the MV Bantams played a fast and exciting game, defeating Yarmouth, 4-3. Cheered on by heavy support from the benches, the Bantams retained their championship title and went on to play Nantucket, Saturday.

The MV Neponset Valley League team won their game at the Raynham Arena, 4-0 against Hopkinton Jr. High.

On Nantucket, Saturday, the MV Peewees lost to the Whalers, 6-1.

The MV Bantams also lost their game on Nantucket, 6-1.

The MV State Bantams lost a squeaker to the Northeasters Bantams, 4-3.

At Dennis, the MV Squirt I team played to a 1-1 tie with Yarmouth.

On home ice, the MV Squirts 2 lost to Gateway, 4-2. Hunter Ponte and Hunter Meader did the MV scoring

At the home Arena, Saturday, the Mites defeated Gateway, 4-3. Dylan Biggs provided strong goaltending. Will Brugiere had all four MV goals.

On Sunday, the MV Peewees rode the Waves, 7-1.

Also Sunday, the MV Mites won two games, 7-3 and 5-3.

In the first contest, Oliver Lively played well in his first goal appearance this season. Will Brugiere had a goal. Eli Gundersen had a hat trick. Dylan Biggs scored twice and Jack Lionnette scored his first of the season.

The Islanders won the second game, 5-3 on two goals by Gundersen, two more by Brugiere, and one by Biggs. Riley Sylvia was effective in goal.

At Dennis, Saturday, the MV Squirt 1 team lost to DY, 5-0. Aiden Marek filled in at goalie, Pete Gillis and Ian Trance played strong defense. Hoffie Hearn and Logan Araujo also played well and Joe Serpa returned after a month’s absence due to injury.

The MV Squirts 2 team lost its battle with Gateway, 4-2, despite Hunter Ponte and Hunter Meader goals. The Squirts 1 lost to Gateway here, 5-2.

Sam and Natalia bow to the best

Samantha Potter, 14, of Oak Bluffs, who trains at the Vineyard Youth Tennis Center, partnered with her friendly foe Natalia Pezzuco of Rhode Island, to reach the final eight in the 16-and-under division at Nashua, N.H. but bowed to the Hammond sisters of Maine, the top-ranked New England pair in their age group.

Field hockey alumnae

The MVRHS field hockey alumni game will be this Saturday, November 26 at 11:30 am, on the field hockey field. All players should be at the field by 11:15 am.

Bon Voyage, Emily

Emily Reich of Oak Bluffs, a student at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, named to the All-American Academic Sailing Team, honoring competitive and academic acheivement, will sail with her former skipper, Stephanie Robie, in the Carlos Agular Match Race, off St. Thomas, November 20-December 4. Eighteen teams are expected to compete.

Other members of Emily’s team are students at Brown University, U.S. Naval Academy, Boston College, Harvard University (2) and St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
