Travel basketball

The 8th grade girls travel basketball team continued their winning ways by defeating Nauset, Saturday morning, at the Sancy Pachico Gym, 42-17. Erin Hill led all scorers with 10 points, followed closely by Kaitlyn Marchand, with nine. Sam Hargy and Erin Hill had ten blocked shots between them.

The girls then traveled to Lakeville for a 4:10 meeting. The game was a mirror image of the previous contest, with a similar score: MV 39, Lakeville 19. Both Erin Hill and Mya Houston scored seven points. Sam Hargy and Kaitlyn Marchand chipped in six a piece. Shannon Morris did a great job holding Lakeville’s big girls to only two points.

This Saturday, the girls take on the state’s top ranked team, Franklin, at the Oak Bluffs School. Tip off is at 1:50 pm. The Vineyarders are currently ranked 8th.

Boys 7th graders take two

The MV 7th grade boys travel team chalked up two wins over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Islanders sent Plymouth South packing, 53-38. Cole Houston led all scorers with 16 points. Dylan Araujo added a dozen.

The Sunday game against Yarmouth-Dennis was a good deal closer, but the Island boys pulled off a 32-29 win. Houston was high man again with 14 points. Luke DeBettencourt was a giant on defense, grabbing a bucket of rebounds.

8th grade boys sweep

The Vineyard 8th grade boys beat Rochester, 36-25, Saturday and Harwich, 41-36, Sunday. Both games were at the Sancy. MV stands at 3-1, surpassing its win total from all of last season. The Islanders have also surrendered the second fewest points in the league thus far.

Frosh flail Falcons

The Vineyard freshman boys basketball team was home to Mashpee, Saturday, and treated the visiting young Falcons to a severe 80-33 thrashing.

At the half the score stood at 48-17.

Every member of the Island squad had generous floor time and virtually all contributed to the final score.

Interscholastic hoops

Tuesday, at West Tisbury, the Up-Islander boys improved to 3-0, parlaying a distinct size advantage into a 60-27 win over Tisbury. Silas Berlin had the game high 20 points. Teammate Chase Sylvia added 18. Tisbury Tiger and sixth grader, Cole Houston produced almost half of his team’s total, finishing with 18 points, including two from long distance.

In interscholastic play, Dec. 8, the Oak Bluffs boys team defeated visiting Tisbury in their first contest of the season, 48-12. Krishna Datta was the game’s high scorer with 18 points. He completed a double-double by hauling down 10 rebounds.

At Vineyard Haven, Dec. 7, the O.B. girls triumphed 52-38. Mollie “Dazzle” deBettencourt led all scorers with 27 points, the most ever totaled by a sixth grader. Kate Marshand added 12 and 11 assists for the Blazers. High scorer for Tisbury was Maya Houston, with 16 points. Kaela Vecchia-Zeitz added eight.

Also, on Dec. 7, the West Tisbury boys defeated the Charter School, but the lady Hawks lost their battle with the Edgartown Eagles, 49-25.

Arching the flood

Barbara Besse and Sue Collinson finished in first place at the Island Bridge Club meeting in the Howes House, West Tisbury, Thursday.

Nancy Neil and Bea Phear were second. There was a tie for third: Robert and Ency Fokos with Barbara and Susan Silk. Six tables were in play.

The ACBL sanctioned IBC meets every Thursday at the Howes House. Players needing a partner are urged to telephone 508-693-2889 by noon on Wednesday for assistance. The entrance fee is $5.00.

Darting at the P-A.

On Thursday, Dec. 1, Gus Leaf, Rick Silva, Scott Corey, and T.R. Fullin beat Michael Lipinsky, Dana Rezendes, Prescott Walsh and Justin Lucas, 9-2, earning the pot.

The following Thursday, Gus Leaf’s crew won again, this time besting Donny Welty, Jef Wray, Tom Della Rocco, and Lenny Vanderhoop. 10-1.

With two weeks left to play, the League standings are: (1) Rene Mathieu’s team with 46; (2) Gus Leaf’s team with 37; (3) Donny Welty’s team with 36; and (4) Michael Lipinsky’s team with 35.

Donny Welty leads with five singles matches won. Dana Rezendes leads the league with nine tons.

Attention Bobby Valentine!

The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League has announced, with understandable pride, the naming of two of the team’s players as top entries in the upcoming 2012 Major League Baseball draft.

Named was Robbie Zinsmeister, the shortstop/outfielder from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, who led the team with a robust .326 batting average, including nine home runs and 26 RBIs. He was selected as the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Also named to the Major League Draft, was All Star outfielder Jeremy Matos of Central Florida University. Jeremy was the League’s home run king with eleven round trippers. He drove in 34 runs.
