Some may have outgrown their teddy bears, but kids who go to the Martha's Vineyard Boys & Girls Clubs can thank some fuzzy friends for a holiday gift to the organization's popular after-school educational program "Power Hour."
Donors gave more than $3,000 at a fundraiser sponsored by Wendy Harman, owner of Point B Realty. The teddy bears stayed in a special suite at the Harbor View Hotel during the Christmas in Edgartown celebration December 10, 11, and 12. The display proved so popular it was held over a few days.
"The teddy bear suite really brought out the kid in so many of our visitors," Ms. Harman said in a statement. "It reminds you of the real magic of the holidays."
More than 200 school-age youngsters participate in the Power Hour program each year.
"The money raised will help us continue to enhance the educational program for our young learners," Peter Lambos, executive director of the Martha's Vineyard Boys & Girls Club, said. "In addition to Power Hour, they have access to activities in our gym, art studio, games room, and computer technology lab."
Guinevere Cramer, who helped organize the event, said the goal was to raise $2,500. With the proceeds exceeding expectations, Point B Realty is already planning for next year's event.
