Young adults can enjoy a movie this evening from 6 to 7:30 at the Vineyard Haven Library. The film is rated PG-13. Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, and Jude Law star in a thriller about the threat of a deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC to deal with the outbreak.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday story times for little ones: the next few topics are the zoo, dogs, and on the 31st, Clifford the Big Red Dog will be visiting. I just love Clifford, don’t you? Tween Wii Gaming for ages 8 to 11 is Wednesdays from 3 to 5 pm. Teens grades 6 and up have Wii Gaming on Fridays from 3:30 to 5 pm. On Thursdays, after-school crafts are offered for ages 5 and up from 3:30 to 4:40 pm.

Art in the Stacks features paintings by Brazilian artist Bella, who is also a musician, singer, songwriter, playwright, and puppeteer. Her paintings will be on display during regular library hours through February 4. Enjoy original art at the V.H. Library throughout the year.

It appears that many of our neighbors are already heading for warmer climes. We can’t complain. I might wish to join them, but I haven’t shoveled anything yet.

I was surprised to see that last year in early January I commented on the beautiful spring weather we were enjoying. Perhaps this bodes well for this winter.

Adult education classes start January 21st at the high school. Register online at acemv.org or at the high school next Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:30 to 6 pm. Several education classes are offered for credit as well. Learn basic auto maintenance, or dance and karaoke, write books for children, or how to appreciate jazz. You can discuss the difficult child or hone your creative writing skills. Try Wampanoag history, Brazil, or World Religions. Thanks to MV Family Center, all Thursday evening ACE MV classes at MVRHS offer free childcare.

All Islanders concerned with our environment are invited to the next meeting of the MV Democratic Council next Saturday morning from 9 to 10:30 at the Howes House. Mary Jane Sorrentino, who was trained by the Gore Climate Change Project, will discuss the causes of global warming, how it affects New England and particularly our coastal areas, and what responses our communities can make. There may not be solutions, but there are actions to mitigate this problem. Ms. Sorrentino, who lives in Providence, is a Sustainability Consultant helping non-profits, small businesses, schools, and others reduce their environmental impact. She is particularly interested in what home gardeners can do.

Got warm clothes you don’t need any more? Clothes To Go is open at the Methodist Church on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2 to 4 pm. Donations are always welcome.

We are sorry to share the news that Cay Chamberlain and Florence Dove have passed away. Both these ladies were active volunteers and contributed in many ways to our community.
