Somerset Berkley shipped their girls varsity and junior varsity basketball teams to the Sancy Pachico Gym on Tuesday, and they sailed away with two wins.

The jayvee Lady Raiders (that’s what was printed on their uniforms) started slowly enough, the score was 10-5 at the half, but they found their stride in the third quarter to go up 21-9 and finished with a flourish, 33-11.

M.V. high scoring seems an inappropriate term, but Emily deBettencourt’s 5 and Mariah Duarte’s 4 were the best the Vineyarders could do.

Somerset’s Kelsey Viera had the game-high 18.

The Varsity Game

The varsity teams proved to be a good match.

The Vineyarders led after the first quarter, 15-13. Most of the scoring was from the foul line. S/B was 4 for 4. MV was 11 for 14.

The Raiders took the lead midway in the second quarter and arrived at the half up by five, 31-26.

With a minute and a half left in the third quarter the Vineyarders edged ahead, 44-41, briefly. The period ended with the Raiders up by one, 45-44.

Three quick long-range baskets gave the Raiders a comfortable lead, 54-46, starting the fourth quarter. (The third trey was the 1,000th point for Raider Taylor Travis.)

Final score: Somerset Berkley 60, Vineyard 56.

Most of the Vineyard’s scoring was by Maggie Riseborough 20, Jennie Lindland 18, and Kendall Robinson 14.

The Islanders’ record slipped to 4-3 overall, 0-2 in the EAC.
