Coyle and Cassidy rallied from a four-point deficit with two minutes remaining to down the Vineyard 52-40, in an Eastern Athletic Conference girls basketball matchup Tuesday in Taunton.

More painful still for the Vineyarders was the loss of leading scorer and rebounder Maggie Riseborough, who left the game late in the third quarter, after being taken down attempting to catch a pass on the fast break. No foul was called on the play. The Vineyard center was hospitalized in Taunton and released after x-rays were negative. Her status for upcoming games against Bishop Stang on Friday and Bishop Feehan, Sunday, is day to day.

M.V. led 23-19 at halftime and maintained the lead into the final minutes, until the Warriors hit a pair of three pointers and led the Islanders to start fouling. Coyle pulled away from the charity stripe and grabbed the win.

In fact, the game was ultimately decided at the foul line, where the Vineyarders shot 8 for 16 and the Warriors shot 14 of 18.

The loss dropped M.V. to 5-4 overall and 0-3 in the EAC.

Jenny Lindland had a great two-way game for M.V. with 16 points and six steals. Kendall Robinson scored six points and grabbed six rebounds.

Despite the loss, coach Lisa Stewart was encouraged by what she saw and hopeful about the games ahead.

“We played awesome, we did a lot of good things,” coach Stewart said. “It was a good learning experience. We know we can beat them [Coyle and Cassidy]. Teams like Coyle and Feehan [Bishop Feehan] are used to playing deep into the playoffs and their poise shows.”

The bright spot for the girls last week was a 48-32 win at Norton on January, 12.

Maggie Riseborough had a huge game with 17 points and 18 rebounds to earn a double-double. Katie Stewart scored 12 points and Kendall Robinson chipped in eight more. Maddie Hughes (five points) and Jenny Lindland (four points) played superb defense.

Next up for the Vineyarders are pair of crucial EAC games against the Bishops: Stang, away on Friday and Feehan, at home Sunday at 2 pm.

JV’s play well in loss

The girls jayvee team might have played its best game of the season, but still fell 54-35 to Coyle and Cassidy, Tuesday. The Vineyarders are a young squad fielding several freshmen, which is not the case with the experienced Warriors.

Emily deBettencourt led the jayvees with nine points. Mariah Duarte scored seven and Lucy Hackney added six.
