The Vineyard boys varsity basketball team won its third game in five days with an emphatic 99-67 win over Coyle and Cassidy Monday at the "Sancy" Pachico gym.
The Vineyard offense shot the lights out from all over the court, sinking 40 of 71 shots from the field (56 percent). All ten Island players got on the scoresheet, six scored in double figures: Izak Browne (19 points), Peter Keaney (16), Jack Roberts (12), Charlie Everett (10), Del Araujo (10) and Carlos Guzman (10).
The Vineyarders improved to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the Eastern Athletic Conference.
M.V. led by 20 points at the half and stretched the margin to 31 points midway through the third quarter. The only suspense generated in the second half was in seeing if the home team would top 100 points.
Coach Mike Joyce was pleased with his team's effort. "That was one of our best shooting days in a long time," coach Joyce said following the win. "We've had back to back efforts. I thought today we might come out a little flat after beating Bourne, who was 8-1...We we're unselfish with the ball, which created a lot of good shots and led to a high shooting percentage."
The previous afternoon, the Vineyarders were nearly as good in defeating Bourne 79-59. The Canalmen came to the Island sporting an 8-1 record. For awhile they held their own, but the Islanders pulled away in the second half.
Jack Roberts led M.V. with 21 points. Peter Keaney had 18, and Charlie Everett added 14.
Last Thursday, the Vineyarders were in Norton to face the Lancers. The Purple and White came out aggressively, forced a number of turnovers and pounded the glass. By halftime, M.V. was in control with a 41-27 lead.
The second half was another matter. The Vineyarders grew passive and were outhustled and outscored 18-6 in the third quarter. The Islanders righted the ship in fourth period and headed for home victorious by the count of 65-60.
Jack Roberts was the high scorer with 22 points. Peter Keaney had 11 points and six rebounds. Del Araujo hauled down 11 rebounds and added four points.
M.V. hosts Bishop Stang in an EAC contest Friday at 4:30 pm and travels to Attleboro on Tuesday for a rematch with league leaders Bishop Feehan. Game time is 5:30 pm.
Jayvees and frosh victorious
The boys jayvee team improved to 6-3 after beating Coyle and Cassidy 59-41 on Monday and Bourne 49-43, Sunday afternoon.
Against Coyle, Kane Araujo topped the scoresheet with 18 points. Adonis Canby had 11 points and Nick Costello scored 10.
In the win over Bourne, Navardo Anderson was the leading scorer with 14 points, followed by Jahmari Thomas with 12 and Nick Costello with 10.
The Vineyard freshmen also rolled over Coyle on Monday, 55-23. Tim Roberts scored 13 points and Ben Poole added 10 more.
The jayvees and the freshmen both host Bishop Stang on Friday at 3 pm. The jayvee game is at MVRHS. The freshmen will play at the Boys and Girls Club in Edgartown.
