Our first snowstorm of the winter brought such joy to the little ones of our town and such tragedy to the Hutchinson family. I really don’t know what to say about Amanda’s death except all the things you usually say. I just saw her last Thursday at the Friends of the Aquinnah Library meeting, where we joked that we were going to hold another bottle drive. She had been responsible for the last one and had made it clear that she wasn’t interested in carting bottles to the redemption center again. I worked with her daughter Alayna this past summer and I was so impressed with her work ethic and good nature.
I’m so used to seeing Amanda around town and especially at the library. For a time she had a sewing/knitting circle at the library. Amanda seemed to know everything about sewing and knitting and if you had a project you needed help with or had questions about, you could come to the library at the appointed time and Amanda would help you work it all out. She always struck me as a very kind woman, with a good sense of humor and a strong commitment to our town.
Amanda was the assistant to both the Aquinnah Board of Health and the Planning Board. She was the wife of Stephen (“Hutch”) and mother to Caitlyn, Dylan, and Alayna. She will be missed by them most especially and by all of us who knew her. The only comfort I can find in this is that when something like this happens in Aquinnah, we all share the grief; it has not happened to “someone else” as is so frequent in the city, but to all of us. Please hold the Hutchinson family in your thoughts and prayers over the coming months. This is something that is going to take a long time for all of us to recover from.
There are two events this weekend: the Annual Pathways Season Celebration will be held on Friday, January 27, from 5:30 to 8:30 at the Pathways space (Chilmark Tavern) in Chilmark. There will be appetizers, dinner, an artbar and a writing room. Come to celebrate the creativity of our area. You can rsvp at 508-645-9088 or by email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Chilmark School PTO will hold its fundraiser at the Chilmark Community Center on Saturday from 7 to 10 pm. It will be a 50’s style dance party with a silent auction. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door or at ticketsmv.com.
