En plein air by Susan Johnson
Oil paintings by Susan Johnson are on display at the Chilmark Bank through February 3. The subject of her final project for Boston University's Graduate Art Education Program, the exhibit features 18 landscape paintings done en plein air at Beetlebung Farm, also in Chilmark. Ms. Johnson will continue studying art with the Vermont College of Fine Art this winter, and has been accepted into the Institute for Doctoral Studies in The Visual Arts, which has residencies worldwide.
Knit-along at BOG
Bunch of Grapes Bookstore hosts a weekly Knit-along on Monday afternoons at 2 pm. In addition to receiving a discount on knitting books, participants are encouraged to bring a project already in the works, or one to start, or needles and yarn for a basic knitting lesson. A "knitting doctor" is available for those that need a little help. A $5 donation is accepted for those who need a lesson. For more information, call the store at 508-693-2291.
For artists
The Martha's Vineyard Center for Visual Arts has grant money available for Island artists and is looking to "support small artistic projects that encourage artists to continue on their path to creativity," according to a press release. Applications from artists of all disciplines and mediums are accepted until April 1 and are available at artmv.org or by contacting Renee Balter at 508-696-7643; rebalter@yahoo.com.
Stress reduction series
Wendy Chabot of Vineyard Mind-Body Medicine and Martha Abbot of Spirit Moves You movement therapy and yoga begin an eight-week series of classes, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, on February 7 at The Yoga Barn in Chilmark. There will be an Introduction to Mindfulness session, an informational and not required for enrollment, on January 31 from 7 to 9 pm, also at The Yoga Barn.
