The Vineyard boys varsity basketball team put two more in the win column last week with victories over John D. O’ Bryant of West Roxbury and Somerset Berkley. M.V. is 13-1 overall and 5-1 in the Eastern Athletic Conference.

Against O’ Bryant in Boston on Monday, the Vineyarders turned in a good all-around effort to win 78-56. Throughout the game, the hosts had trouble penetrating the Vineyard’s 1-3-1 defense, which resulted in a number of steals and tipped balls.

Izak Browne was the top scorer with 20 points. Peter Keaney posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jack Roberts had 14 points. Del Araujo put in 13 points and grabbed 9 boards.

Monday’s victory stood in stark contrast to last Friday’s game at the Sancy against EAC rivals Somerset Berkley.

Fresh off of a big 64-57 win at then league leaders Bishop Feehan on January 24, the Vineyarders came out flat and trailed for much of the game against a Raiders team that clearly brought its ‘A’ game to the Island.

The Purple were simply dismal in the first half, shooting 6 of 29 from the field (just over 20 percent) and 1 of 6 from the three-point arc. M.V. trailed 29-20 at the half.

Vineyard fortunes were revived in the second half, thanks to 9-0 run that cut the S.B. lead to 31-29. From there, the teams battled to and fro.

In the decisive fourth quarter, Jack Roberts and Peter Keaney scored seven points each as M.V. survived the scare and won 68-65. The Raiders had a chance to tie the game on the last shot, but Vaughn Browner’s three-point attempt rolled in and out of the cylinder to the relief of the Vineyard faithful and coach Mike Joyce.

“We dodged a bullet there. They outplayed us most of the game,” coach Joyce said. “We played a nice second half, but still, too many mistakes, too lethargic in the first half, whether it’s a hangover from Feehan or midterms or both, but they gutted it out.”

The Vineyarders are back in action Friday in Taunton against Coyle and Cassidy.

Frosh win, jayvees lose

The Vineyard freshman boys improved to 9-3 with a 58-52 win Friday over Somerset Berkley at the M.V. Boys and Girls Club. Alex GordonBeck scored 18 points and Tim Roberts had 12.

The jayvees didn’t fare as well and lost to the Raiders 49-45 at MVRHS. Navardo Anderson scored 10 points for M.V.

Coach Jason O’ Donnell was unhappy with his team’s showing. “We didn’t shoot the ball well. We were outhustled and outplayed in the second half,” he said.

The jayvees are 7-5.
