On Tuesday February 14, the Aquinnah Public Library will sponsor, “Chick Flicks and Chocolates!”
The fun begins at 5 pm. Call 508-645-2314 with questions.
Ugh. What was worse: that we lost the Superbowl, or that we lost to the Giants, again? There is a pall of sadness over all of New England right now, I can feel it. The collective bummer. It was so very, very close. And now it is over and we lost. As bad as I and my fellow fans feel, it must be so much worse for Tom Brady and the rest of the Patriots. I know it’s just a game, but it feels like so much more.
On a brighter note, for some, Valentine’s Day is coming up and you can do most of your shopping for your sweetie in Chilmark. Lisa Vanderhoop is selling her handmade Valentines’ cards at the Sovereign Bank, Lisa has a wide array of cards not just her dog portraits, so stop in and take a look. Then you can head to Chilmark Chocolates and pick up a box or two for your loved one(s). Speaking of Chilmark Chocolates, they are open until February 16 and will then close until March 20. You have been warned.
And here is some really good news. Ella Mahoney was awarded a gold key award and Chantal Booker was awarded a silver key award by the Boston Globe’s 2012 Scholastic Art Awards. Ella won for a photograph and Chantal won for a stained glass piece that she made. Both of their works will be on display in a Boston gallery and Ella will go on to compete in the National Awards in New York. The gold key award is the highest level of achievement on the regional arts level, of all 14,000 entries statewide less than five percent won the gold key. Congratulations Ella and Chantal. We are so proud of you. Congratulations also to my fellow columnist Katie Carroll, whose son, Bradley won honorable mention. His work will be displayed at a local gallery.
At the library the upcoming events are:
Today, Thursday, Feb. 9, from 5 to 7 pm, there will be a movie for adults. There will be another one on February 23, also from
5 to 7 pm.
On February 16, from 5 to 6 pm there will be a children’s movie at the library. Kids are encouraged to wear comfy clothes and bring a cozy blanket or mat.
The next Book Discussion Group for Adults (copies of books available at the library) will be on Tuesday, February 21, 5 to 6 pm. The book is deWaal’s “The Hare with Amber Eyes”.
Nonie and Dan’s 7a will be closing at the end of the month for a few weeks, so they can make some upgrades to the store and I’m hoping, get a little break. They are having a sale right now, so stop on by.
It’s getting to be that time when the Island clears out and everyone seems to head to warmer climes. I’ve heard of upcoming trips to Costa Rica, Florida, and even Uganda. Safe travels everyone, and tell us all about it when you get back.
