Two Federal Hockey League teams face off here Saturday

Hockey fans will have a chance to see how the professionals play the game this Saturday, when two entries in the Federal Hockey League face off at 5 pm at the M.V. Arena. The Cape Cod Bluefins, the Cape’s only professional sports franchise, will play host to the Danbury Whalers, from Danbury, Conn.

The two teams are part of the eight-team Federal Hockey League (FHL), whose Single “A” professional teams are located from Delaware to Illinois to Ontario to Hyannis. Players come from all sorts of hockey backgrounds: NCAA Division I and III colleges, the East Coast Hockey League, the Central Hockey League, and American Hockey League, the latter the highest level feeder for the truly big time, the National Hockey League. Even former NHL players have graced the odd FHL roster.

The FHL is wrapping up its second season, the Bluefins their first. Saturday’s game is being billed as the First Annual Fish Bowl, pitting as it does teams named after finned saltwater creatures. The FHL has enjoyed unusual success in its brief history, according to Brian Kolb, president and CEO of the Bluefins (www.capecodbluefins.com).

The Vineyard’s passion for hockey is no surprise to Mr. Kolb, who played for Sandwich High School a decade ago, before going on to play at the College of the Holy Cross. Tickets for Saturday’s game are $15.
