Jean Metcalf Chapman, 93, of Auburn, N.Y., died on February 28 after a short stay at Auburn Community Hospital, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
She was the daughter of Harold and Maud Metcalf and the granddaughter of Edwin Metcalf, founder of the Columbian Rope Company. Born in Auburn on December 13, 1918, Jean was educated at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Penn., and attended Pine Manor College in Wellesley and Finch College in New York.
Jean was an active member of Owasco Country Club for more than 70 years where she excelled at golf and tennis. She was a strong supporter of Auburn and was a major donor to the Auburn YMCA and many local charities.
Jean had a warm, generous spirit and befriended people from all walks of life. Her passion was her family and her many friends. Her love of Auburn was rivaled by her love for Martha’s Vineyard where she vacationed nearly every summer of her life.
Jean was married to Dene Barton Chapman in Auburn on November 14, 1942. She is survived by her sister, Carol Metcalf Hole of Vineyard Haven and her five children; Bart Chapman (Linda) of Auburn, Michael Chapman of Laguna Beach, Calif., Jean (Terrance) Riley of Belmont, Molly Kresler of Winchester, and Carol Chapman of Vineyard Haven; her six grandchildren, Carrie Kresler, Andrew Kresler, Lauren Chapman, Christopher Chapman, Maud Riley, Chloe Riley, and her great-grandchild, Weston.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Dene Barton Chapman, on September 19, 1996 and her sister, Nancy Metcalf Green Wyatt-Brown, in August 2002.
A memorial service will be held in the spring. Contributions may be made in her name to the Auburn YMCA and Auburn Community Hospital.
