Aquinnah

February break is over. Yes, everyone has returned from their sunshine-y jaunts or ski vacations. Noni and Jed and their three boys travelled to Costa Rica. Noni said her favorite part of the trip was seeing her best friend and listening to the howler monkeys while lying by the pool. Her seven-year-old son Clyde got up on a surf board for the first time, which was very exciting. The Madison/Sauer clan went to Nicaragua and Anja May took her boys to the Bahamas…or maybe it was Bermuda: it’s hard to keep track. While I’m jealous of the trips to sunshine and beaches I have to say that I’m not jealous at the thought of travelling with small children. I went skiing with my husband and son over the break and the six hours we spent in the car to return back to the Vineyard, (of course missing the last boat) was enough to make me want to stay put for a while. I can just imagine what a really long plane ride is like with little ones.

“Shakespeare for the Masses” is back this weekend. We will be performing at the Pit Stop in Oak Bluffs, right across from Tony’s Market. The play will be “All’s Well That Ends Well” and it will go up Friday and Saturday at 7 pm.

Hugs and kisses and kind words go out to Lisa and Buddy Vanderhoop who lost their beloved dog, Amos, this past week. Everyone in Aquinnah knew Amos, a sleek, beautiful and very friendly dog; I will miss seeing him with Lisa around town. Losing a pet is so hard: they embody love and devotion, and it seems so unfair that they should suffer at all and even more unfair for their owners that they cannot live forever.

Very Happy Birthday wishes to Lisa Vanderhoop (I do hope Lisa will be up to celebrating) and Ken Wentworth, two Aquinnah souls who share the same birthday of March 13, and also to Richard Skidmore whose birthday is the following day, March 14.

Speaking of birthdays, there will be a big bash this Saturday for Rodeo Purves-Langer (yes, my guy), Quinlan Slavin, and Broden Vincent, who are all turning five and were all born within three days of each other. We (the moms) thought it would be easiest to just do one big party; I’ll let you know next week if we made the right decision.

The monthly blood pressure clinic in Aquinnah will be held March 15 from 2 to 3 pm in the town hall. It is free and open to all residents of Aquinnah.

The First Baptist Church of Vineyard Haven and the Community Baptist Church of Aquinnah are hosting a St. Patrick’s Day dinner and movie at the Baptist Parish House on William Street in Vineyard Haven on Saturday, March 17. It starts at 5:30 and will be a traditional St. Paddy’s day dinner and then a showing of “The Quiet Man” with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. Tickets are $10. Get all the details by calling 508-693-1539. No green beer will be served. They promise.

That same weekend of course is the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival, which kicks off Friday March 16 and runs through Sunday March 18 at the Chilmark Community Center. The schedule is up online at tmvff.org.
