The Dukes County Sheriff’s office served eviction papers Monday on the Golden Dragon Chinese Restaurant at 14 Water Street in Vineyard Haven for non-payment of rent.
Last May, the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company purchased the property and two-story building that housed the restaurant and Sweats of Vineyard Haven, a clothing retailer. The building is adjacent to the Vineyard Haven supermarket, which will be expanded.
Stop & Shop’s real estate company bought the two-parcel property on Water Street for $950,000 from IB Property Holdings, LLC, a Delaware-based company.
Janice Cheng, whose family has owned and operated the Golden Dragon for almost 20 years, told The Times in a phone call Monday they had been in negotiations to end their lease with Stop & Shop. Ms. Cheng said they are looking for a new location in Vineyard Haven.
“We would like to stay in the town we know, and where customers know us,” she said. “We hope to be reopening by June if we find a new location.”
“We’re going to continue to work hard giving Islanders good service,” Ms. Cheng added.
