Two new eateries in Edgartown feature outdoor dining

The Edgartown zoning board of approval (ZBA) granted conditional approval for a new downtown restaurant and the expansion of a cafe at its March 7 meeting. Both will have outdoor seating.

The ZBA approved a plan for a new restaurant at 55 Main Street. A number of retail stores have occupied the space since the building was constructed in 1930. Until this year, In the Woods, a shop selling handmade woodcraft and imported clothing rented the space.

Patrick Courtney plans a 49-seat restaurant with eight seats on the sidewalk in front of the establishment.

Both supporters and opponents of the new eatery expressed strong opinions at the public hearing.

The ZBA approved a conditional special permit, with conditions including a review of the permit after one season to consider any complaints about noise or trash.

The owners cannot transfer the special permit. If they sell the restaurant, the prospective owners would need to apply to the ZBA for a new special permit.

Also approved was a plan to expand MacPhail’s Cafe into the space previously occupied by Vineyard Photo. Owner Bryan MacPhail plans to produce pizza and ice cream at the location. Mr. MacPhail told the ZBA he plans to sell pizza from a small takeout window, and offer five small outdoor tables on a brick walkway adjacent to the municipal parking lot. He plans to sell ice cream from a separate shop.

The board attached a number of conditions to its approval, including a review of the special permit in one year. The board also said the permit is not transferable if the business is sold.
