Edgartown

I’m sitting in the Cape Air terminal at Logan right now, waiting for that little Cessna to bring me home. The sun is shining, the weather is great for flying, and I can’t wait to see our little slice of paradise from the sky. And from what I understand, I will be greeted by a chorus of pinkletinks as the sun sets this evening. There are few sounds I love more.

Driving on Upper Main Street last week, we were surprised to see a ton of traffic. As we neared the Stop & Shop and saw an officer in the middle of the street, we were automatically concerned that there was some sort of accident to explain the traffic deadlock. Luckily, that was not the case; all was explained when we spied the line snaking out the door of the Dairy Queen all the way to the back of the parking lot as hundreds of children anticipated their first cone of the season. What a good way to spend the afternoon following a half day of school.

I was sad to miss the first ever Edgartown St. Patrick’s Day parade that started in the Yacht Club parking lot and proceeded up Kelley Street. Luckily Sydney Mullen documented the festivities. I love the giant wooden nickel from the Newes. Too funny.

Hey seniors, have cabin fever? The Anchors has several upcoming trips planned, including shopping, tours, and museum visits. So if you need a little break from M.V. with some good people, head off to Northborough Crossing, Wednesday, April 25, to the North End of Boston and Haymarket, Friday, May 25, or to the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Wednesday, June 13. For more information, or to reserve your spot, call 508-627-4368.

The Edgartown School PTA will be hosting a pizza and bingo night for families of Edgartown School children, Friday, March 23, from 6 to 7:30 pm in the cafeteria. Go enjoy Lattanzi’s pizza while you wait for the winning numbers to be called.

Join a Felix Neck naturalist for a Woodcock Walk on
Friday, March 23, from 6:30 to 8 pm. The American woodcock is a bird known by many names, including bog snipes, woodys, night partridge, bog suckers, mud bats, or timberdoodles. Watch the male woodcocks take off into the sky and perform for the females of the species, crashing to earth in a final daredevil act. For more info, call 508-627-4850.

My birthday shout-outs were left out of last week’s column, so here they are now, if a bit late. We owe Lorna Andrade a much belated happy birthday, as she celebrated on March 3. Late wishes also go out to Ethan Morgan, who turned five March 11, and to Liam Smith who hit 15 years on March 12. Michael Snowden and Zach Townes shared March 19 as their day to celebrate, while Dan Townes followed with a March 20 birthday.

Upcoming this week, Nina Kiersted celebrates March 25, followed by Amy Swartz Ellrodt on March 27 and Janice C. Belisle on March 28. My in-law birthday extravaganza begins with TM Araujo and my mother-in-law, Anne Weagle, on March 24, followed by my husband, Dave, on the 25th, then Marie Araujo on the 26th. We will all be meeting in Sudbury to celebrate Marie and Anne’s mother’s (my gram-in-law’s) 90th. Happy birthday to all!
