South Mountain named "best for the world"
South Mountain Company, an employee owned architecture, building, and renewable energy firm in West Tisbury, has been recognized in the first nationwide 'Best for the World' and 'Best for Workers' lists as a business creating the most positive worker impact. South Mountain and the other businesses on the lists earned the highest scores of more than 500 Certified B Corporations nationwide, according to a press release.
"South Mountain is a leader in the global movement to redefine success in business," said Jay Coen Gilbert, co-founder of B Lab, the nonprofit organization that governs the B Impact Assessment and certifies B Corporations. Only three other companies in the country – Partnership Capital Growth in San Francisco, Calif., Namaste Solar in Boulder, Colo., and RE:Vision Archhitecture in Philadelphia, Penn., were selected for both lists.
B Corp is the informal name for Benefit Corporation, a structure which obligates businesses to pursue a triple bottom line, which means they are accountable not only for generating profits but also for creating positive social and environmental impacts.
The B Corp structure exists "to suit the needs of entrepreneurs and investors who want to make a better world through business," said Jay Coen Gilbert, co-founder of B Labs, a nonprofit based in Berwyn, Penn., that promotes legislation allowing companies to formally incorporate as benefit corporations.
