Aquinnah

The Island has been a little too exciting lately with the shootings in West Tisbury and then the car accident that killed two people last week in Aquinnah. I know that Albert Fischer, who was the first on the scene to the accident, was most shaken by what he witnessed. And who would not be? Although he was upset, he acted quickly and appropriately by immediately calling 911. You never know how the world is going to use you some days and what you will be called upon to do. I’m glad to have a good neighbor in Albert. I often think that Aquinnah has three columnists — June Manning, myself and Albert’s Facebook page.

This weekend is both Easter and Passover, how often does that happen?

The Community Baptist Church of Gay Head will hold services at 6 am on Easter Sunday. The M.V. Hebrew Center will hold Shabbat Minch Service (including Kaddish) on Saturday at 4:45 pm and a community Passover Seder at 5:30 pm. But of course the big event for kids is the giant Easter Egg Hunt at the Duck Inn on Sunday at 1 pm. There will be a potluck lunch served, so please bring a dish to share. The Aquinnah library will also hold an Easter egg hunt on Saturday April 7 at 10:30 am.

M.V. Community Services is holding its annual Electronics Disposal Day on Saturday, April 7. from 9 am to 2 pm on the campus of MVCS located at 111 Edgartown Road — right across from the regional high school in Oak Bluffs. This is your opportunity to get rid of all those old and tired electronic and electrical appliances taking up space in your basement. They will accept: computers, monitors, televisions, printers, notebooks, copiers, scanners, air conditioners, stereo equipment, dehumidifiers, cell phones, microwaves, fax machines, all refrigerators, washers, dryers and ranges. Fees (between $1 and $35) are tax-deductible and go to MVCS. Disposal of the collection is made off Island in an environmentally friendly way. For more information, go to mvcommunityservices.com.

The next monthly blood pressure clinic in Aquinnah will be held Thursday, April 12 from 2 to 3 pm in the town hall. It is free and open to all. If you have questions, call 781-534-2543.

On Sunday, April 29, at 1 pm a memorial gathering for Amanda Hutchinson will he held at the Chilmark Community Center. Pictures and stories will he shared, and refreshments will be served. On behalf of her family, all who wish to celebrate her life are welcome to join us in her honor.

Congratulations to Frank and Melanie Perez who join the ranks of parents with their work cut out for them; they now have three boys. They welcomed the third, Diego Francisco David Perez, on Thursday, March 22 at 2:39 pm at Mass. General Hospital. Diego was 6 pounds, 14 ounces and 18 inches long. Everyone is now home and doing well.

Happy Birthday to Nancy Delaney whose birthday was April 4.

Strings teacher Becky Barca-Tinus and her students performed their recital this past weekend at the Whaling Church in Edgartown. There were many kids from Aquinnah who study with Becky either through the Chilmark Preschool or privately. Waylon Sauer, Claus Smith, and Rodeo Purves-Langer all performed in the Preschool demonstration. It was amazing to see such little people concentrating and playing the violin. Even more amazing is that they then sat quietly and watched the rest of the concert for another half hour. Other Aquinnah students were May Baird, Noah Manning, and Menasha and Cole Leport (Cole played cello). It was a most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
