The Martha’s Vineyard Prescribed Fire Partnership will conduct a controlled burn on Thursday, April 5, at The Trustees of Reservation’s Long Point Wildlife Refuge in West Tisbury.
Smoke may be visible over the south coast throughout the day on Thursday.
“A trained and experienced fire team will closely monitor local weather conditions, such as wind and humidity, and make adjustments in the schedule as needed to ensure the safety of both crew members and residents,” Martha’s Vineyard Prescribed Fire Partnership officials said.
The Partnership has used controlled burning on more than 100 acres per year on the Vineyard over the last six years, according to a press release.
Member organizations of The Martha’s Vineyard Prescribed Fire Partnership include Mass Audubon, The Nature Conservancy, Polly Hill Arboretum, Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation, and The Trustees of Reservations.
