Gas prices continue to increase, more so on Martha's Vineyard

April 4, 2012

Gas prices in Massachusetts crept up 3 cents per gallon in the latest AAA survey. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded Monday was $3.79 per gallon, up 23 cents from $3.56 per gallon a year ago.

Survey takers found prices for a gallon of regular ranged from $3.65 to $3.95 per gallon. On Martha's Vineyard, the price of regular hovered around $4.60 on Monday.

Gas prices are rising higher as the Patrick administration presses ahead with service reductions and MBTA fare hikes that are expected to push thousands of current system users back into their vehicles and as state officials mull long-term revenue sources to address transportation systems that analysts say are chronically underfunded, the State House News service reported.

In addition to lacking funds to finance system repairs and expansion plans, the Patrick administration has deployed regular rounds of borrowing to pay for daily operations at the Mass. Department of Transportation.
